The trout in the photo were caught just before dusk on the last Friday in August at Kirkby Stephen. These are my sons Thomas (8) and James (6) who have just started fishing. This was Thomas's third outing and a 7 year old friend came along. I put Tom at a dub about 50 yards downstream from the other 2 and set him off fishing. About 10 minutes later there was cries of Help! Help! and I could see he was struggling with something. When I got closer I could see the rod was well bent and assumed it was the bottom, drift wood or an eel. I looked into the water and saw what it was I began to panic in case it got off. With instructions to keep the rod tip well up Tom played it for a few minutes until he could draw it in between me and the bank and I flicked it out of the water. The trout was just over 17 inches long and about 2 lb 5 oz weight. Tom's grandparents had both trout for dinner. The rod, reel and line cost about £12 from Aldi, the float was home made, No 10 hook, a 3 inch garden worm. So it just goes to show you don't need expensive tackle.
